Viable seed

From the BBC:

Israeli researchers say they have succeeded in growing a date palm from a 2,000-year-old seed.
The seed was one of several found during an excavation of the ancient mountain fortress of Masada.

Scientists working on the project believe it is the oldest seed ever germinated.

…The palm is from a variety that became extinct in the Middle Ages and was reputed to have powerful medicinal properties.

  1. The potential in a seed is amazing. Along time ago, I read of a Chinese lotus seed that archaeologists had excavated and dated at 4000 years. It also germinated when planted. I’m not sure if this was verified or just a good tale. Like your site!

  2. I stumbled across your blog while I was doing some online research. This is an amazing story. The thing I don’t get, however, is why I can’t get my seeds from just last year to do anything!
