The Human Flower Project happily reports:
One of the largest manufacturers of newsprint in the U.S. has agreed to stop clear-cutting hardwood forest, good news for lady slippers and hundreds more wild species of the Cumberland Plateau
I’m lovin’ the photos…
Wow, what a thrill to see that other people have been following this progress! Bowater is the company, the largest landowner on the Cumberland Plateau, and they signed an agreement with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), to stop
clearcutting natural hardwood forests and converting them into biologically sterile pine plantations. Bowater has also pledged not to purchase fiber from pine plantations that replace native forests, besides agreeing to limit its use of harmful chemical herbicides and fertilizers.
The NRDC now plans to persuade other paper producers to follow Bowater’s lead. The group is a powerhouse–I’ve been posting their efforts, and success stories, under the “Conservation” category on my site.
