They grow everywhere

Have you ever wondered whether any orchids grow wild in your neighbourhood? Chances are that at least one or two varieties might be growing in a local field, even if they’re not the showy tropical varieties you would wear in a corsage.

Give this neat little tool a try, from the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew:

World Checklist of Monocotyledons

Don’t be intimidated. In the field marked "Family", type in "Orchidaceae".

Look at the radio buttons near the bottom left; the choices are "Continent", "Region", and "Botanical Country".

Try clicking on "Botanical Country, and look for your province, or state, or country. Then click on "Search".
